Foreword
Most of us either presently have or may have had a loved one diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The effect on the entire family can be overwhelming, and communication often becomes a struggle not only for and with the loved one, but between the other family members who may be dealing with stress, sadness, frustration, fear, and a feeling of loss.
We are not born knowing how to communicate with a person with dementia—but we can learn. Improving our communication skills will help make caregiving less stressful and will improve the quality of the relationship with our loved one. Effective communication skills can also enhance our ability to manage the difficult behavior we may encounter as we care for and interact with a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.
Being in the moment, enjoying each other’s company, sharing new experiences, and creating a loving and supportive environment each day are important not only for our loved one but for our own peace of mind as well.
Dr. Linda Ganzenmuller’s story is led by “Tiny Professors” who instinctively understand that their grandmother is changing, and they choose to continue to do the things they love to do with her - playing games, baking cookies, going for walks, and taking an active role in her story-telling. They “throw out the rule book”, easily adjust, and just have fun with her. They love and respect their grandmother just the way she is, and they have no expectations.
Dr. Ganzenmuller has also provided a legacy journal for children to complete with their loved ones so they may capture wonderful memories and have them to share these memories with their own children one day. No matter what your age may be, this little book is eye-opening and insightful, reminding us that connecting and appreciating our time together is the most precious gift we can give each other.
